The legal system of Nevis was adopted from the English Common Law system. The governing laws are partly codified and partly based on case law. There are approximately 60 highly qualified Barristers and Solicitors in St. Kitts and Nevis. There is a High Court and a Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, with all final appeals to the Judicial Committee of Her Majesty's Privy Council in London, England.
On April 16th 2005, the Caribbean Region welcomed the inauguration of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the region's highest appellate court, situated in Trinidad and Tobago. In its first phase, the CCJ will function as a trade court. In the future, the CCJ will have powers to adjudicate on all civil and criminal matters arising from national courts such as the High Court of St. Kitts and Nevis.
